Tift Merritt: Traveling Companion | A Physical Narrative in Type

Role: Lead Designer / Design Director
Label: Yep Roc Records

For the deluxe, expanded box set of Tift Merritt’s NYT-acclaimed Traveling Alone, my goal was to create a physical object that honored the weariness and beauty of Tift’s stories and music. This edition — a hardbound lyric book and multi-disc set — was designed to be a tactile piece that would hold Traveling Alone plus ten unreleased acoustic tracks recorded in Brooklyn.

My process was an exercise in analog resonance. To reflect the grit and exhaustion of travel, I moved away from digital perfection. I spent hours scanning individual, weather-beaten letters from worn-out vintage books, then hand-pieced them together to construct the titles for the album and the lyric book. I wanted every word to carry the weight of a journey.

When the work was finished, Tift shared: “This is the most beautiful thing I've held in my hands.” This piece remains a testament to the belief that the most enduring design is that which feels as if it has lived a life of its own.
